International Open Access Week on October 21–27
The 2019 International Open Access Week will be held on October 21-27, 2019.
Open Access is free, has free online access to research results (scientific publications, research data, and other high-quality research material) and allows each user to read, copy, analyse, re-use it, subject to copyright.
This year’s theme, „Open for Whom? Equity in Open Knowledge“ builds on the groundwork laid during last year’s focus of „Designing Equitable Foundations for Open Knowledge“.
As the transition to a system for sharing knowledge that is open by default accelerates, the question „Open for whom?“ is becoming ever more important. Whose interests are being prioritized in the actions we take and in the platforms that we support? Whose voices are excluded? Are underrepresented groups included as full partners from the beginning? Are we supporting not only open access but also equitable participation in research communication? These questions will determine the extent to which emerging open systems for research will address inequities in the current system or replicate and reinforce them.
It has become a tradition that OpenAIRE invites to participate in series of webinars highlighting OpenAIRE activities, services and tools and reaching out to the wider community with relevant talks.
On the programme this year:
- Monday October 21st at 12.00 P.M.: OpenAPC - cost transparency of Open Access publishing by Christoph Broschinski and Andreas Czerniak (UNIBI)
- Monday October 21st at 3.00 P.M.: Research Data Management by S. Venkataraman (DCC) and Thomas Margoni (CREATe)
- Tuesday October 22nd at 11.00 P.M.: Horizon 2020 Open Science Policies and beyond by Emilie Hermans (OpenAIRE)
- Friday October 25th at 12.00 P.M.: Plan S compliance for Open Access Journals - what we know so far and where we think we're heading by Dominic Mitchell (DOAJ)
- Friday October 25th at 3.00 PM.: From Open Science to Inclusive Science by Paola Masuzzo
You can register via this form.
We invite you to watch a documentary “Paywall: the Business of Scholarship“
Paywall: The Business of Scholarship dives into the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 35-40% profit margin associated with the top academic publisher Elsevier and looks at how that profit margin is often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google.
