Celebrate World Environment Day on June 5
At the opening of the International Conference on Global Environmental Problems in Stockholm in 1972 year, the United Nations General Assembly declared this day World Environment Day. The participants of the conference (representatives of 115 countries and international organizations) stated that natural resources and various ecosystems must be preserved for future generations.
The United Nations seeks to inform the world community on a wide range of environmental issues and calls on politicians to take concrete action.
If current pollution does not decrease, as announced by the United Nations Environment Program until 2050, there will be more plastic in the seas than fish. The virtual exhibition "World Ocean", prepared by VGTU Library Exhibition Coordinator Aušra Šileikienė, makes you think about these problems. The European Parliament has decided to ban on throwaway plastics by 2021. Single-use plastic cutlery, cotton buds, straws and stirrers to be banned by 2021. Often such items are used for a short time, but when discarded, they do not decompose for decades. The seas and oceans are particularly affected by plastics waste, with plastic waste accounting for about 80% of marine waste. Plastic particles are found in the bodies of turtles, seals, birds, fish, and crustaceans and thus enter human food. The countries of the European Union will also have to take the necessary measures to reduce the use of the remaining plastic food and beverage packaging. The European Parliament and the Council have agreed to bind states 90% collection target for plastic bottles by 2029, to ensure that at least 25% plastic containers are recycled by 2025, and to reach 30% recycling levels by 2030.
We invite you to get acquainted with a topic that is relevant to us all and ways to protect your environment and the world's resources for future generations.
Throughout June, you can access The MIT Press Direct e-book database, which has a collection of more than 2,500 e-books on a variety of topics: arts, architecture and design, biomedical sciences, business, economics and finance, informatics, engineering, humanities, information sciences, philosophy, psychology, etc. Among them are and publications on ecology >>>
