Laboratory of Strength of Mechanics
The laboratory has been founded in 1962. For the long time its specializations were the investigations of statically and cyclically loaded structures for demands of nuclear power plants, vessels, submarines, transportation equipment, space and aviation industries.
Since 1992 the laboratory participates in the international investigation projects. Remarkable results have been discovered under projects “The longevity prolongation of mining and transport equipment”, “Investigation of Crack Growth and Threshold Conditions of Austempered Ductile Iron, Spheroidal Ductile Iron and Forged Steel”.
At the present time the program “Cyclic strength and crack propagation resistance investigation of cast and welded components of mining and transport equipment” is in process. This international program has commercial and academic participants in the USA, Australia, France, Germany and Finland. Also the joint investigations are performed with Material research centre of Manchester University, Institute of investigation and design of nuclear energetic facilities in Russia, and many others.
The most remarkable works:
- Investigations of thread joints for aviation and space industries, transportation equipments and submarines at the ambient and high temperatures.
- Nuclear power plants threat joints resistance investigation for low- and high- cycle fatigue. As an example it can be marked the fatigue tests of nuclear power plant reactor cover bolts in diameter of 170 mm. Under these investigations there were improved the computational methods for nuclear power plants and the other like purposes equipment.
- Experimental and analytical investigations of shakedown at various fracturing stages. Joints relaxation analysis and prediction.
- Investigation of plates of welded cast iron and cast iron with inclusions for high-cycle fatigue (up to 108 cycles).
- Investigations of fatigue crack formation and propagation of mineral mining facilities structural elements containing technological defects.
- Investigations of layered materials used in transportation and mineral mining industries.
- Investigations of austempered ductile iron.
Accreditation
Laboratory is accredited by Lithuanian National Accreditation Bureau (LA) under the following normative documents: LST EN ISO/IEC 17025:2006 (identical to ISO/IEC 17025:2005) in the fields of Tension tests of metallic materials, Bending test of metallic materials, Tension test of weld joints, Fatigue tests of metallic materials.
