On February 18th, the 11th traditional International Vilnius Book Fair was opened in Lithuanian Exhibition Centre “Litexpo”; this year the event is focused on the identity issue – who we are, who we will become.

“Printed word was and will remain one of the most significant means of culture dissemination and the basis of our identity. Therefore, we are all responsible for the future of the book”, - Dalia Grybauskaitë, President of Lithuania and the patroness of Vilnius Book Fair, said during the opening of the event.

Vilnius Gediminas Technical University is represented in this fair by the publishing house “Technika”; its books, research journals and other publications are exhibited there.

On the first day of the fair, the authors and publishers of the VGTU textbook “Environmental Protection” got an award in the forum “What kind of textbook does a student need?” ...Nizar Jamal (CTO of Impelsys, India) delivered his report “ePublishing Challenges and Case Studies”; he presented e-book publishing options and explained the functionality and attractiveness of such books for the readers, publishers and librarians. After the event, VGTU representatives introduced a new e-books site www.ebooks.vgtu.lt, created on iPublishCentral (http://www.ipublishcentral.com) by Impelsys.

On the second day of the Vilnius Book Fair, the University invited to the forum, where the textbook “Điuolaikinë logistika” (Modern Logistics) by VGTU professor Raműnas Palđaitis was presented. Kind words about the importance of this textbook were said by the reviewers of the textbook and by the representatives of VGTU.

The Rector of VGTU, Prof. R. Ginevičius, invited the large crowd gathered in the conference hall to participate in a seminar named “The Publishing of Lithuanian Research Journals: The Present Situation and Future Perspectives”. A report about publishing of research journals in Lithuania and their place in the world context was delivered by Prof. R. Krivaitis, the Vice-Rector for Research at VGTU. E. Dagienë, the Director of the publishing house “Technica”, talked about strategic plans and how to expand the dissemination of research journals. The discussions continued at the VGTU exhibit.

The last VGTU event in this book fair, which received many visits by book lovers on Friday afternoon, was a presentation of the books by the authors from VGTU: “Lietuviř kalba studentams uţsieniečiams“ (Lithuanian Language for Foreign Students), „Transportininkř kalbos kultűra“ (The Language of Transport Specialists), „Kalbininkř patarimai studentams“ (Linguists’ Advice for Students) and a monograph „Lietuviř fizikos terminijos raida“ (The Development of Physics Terminology in Lithuanian) .

The book fair is a 4 day event – from February 18th till 21st. Every day traditionally has a different name; therefore, everyone is welcome to the Library Day, Long Friday, Day of Fancy Meetings and Family Day.
