VGTU – Leader of International Student Mobility Program ERASMUS in Lithuania

After assessing the international mobility of Lithuanian universities  in 2010-2011 academic year, data showed that  Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) is a leader of implementation of the ERASMUS program in Lithuania. VGTU is the most receiving and sending the teaching and non-teaching staff to/from foreign countries. During the 2010-2011 academic year Vilnius Gediminas Technical University sent 146 and received the 89 lecturers and staff. Also, VGTU is the most foreign students receiving university in Lithuania. In recent years 302 students studied under the ERASMUS program at VGTU. Minister of Education and Science has emphasized that this is one of the most important things for Lithuania to compete with universities in the world and ensure a high quality studies. It is necessary for Lithuanian universities to attract more incoming students from foreign countries to become centers of attraction of higher education in Eastern Europe. Leader of the international mobility of outgoing students is Vilnius University (VU) sending 596 students, the second is VGTU – 494 students, but in proportion to the number of students studying at universities, outgoing students ratio of VGTU is nearly twice bigger in size compared to VU.

One of the key priorities of VGTU is the development of internationality and to maintain the continuous engagement of students who have acquired long-term international experience during the study period at the rate of at least 20 percent of all enrolled students. The University is also expanding international network of partners for the implementation of the ERASMUS program studies and practices, as well as together with foreign universities is designing joint study programs in English to improve opportunities for foreign students to study in Lithuania.
